Counselling Service – Individual Programs

Substance use

Assessment

A comprehensive assessment helps a person decide if his/her use of alcohol or drugs could be a problem, and if so, what might be the best course of action to deal with it. An assessment involves completing questionnaires, reviewing the alcohol or drug use (for example, how much does the individual drink or use, how often, and for how long), and whether the use of alcohol or drugs is beginning to interfere with life at home, work, school, or health. The counselor provides honest non-judgmental feedback and helps the person set goals for change and decide on the best course of action. Options include individual, group, or family counseling, or a referral to an outside program (such as a residential treatment program or a community agency). Assessments are completed in both Kitchener and Cambridge offices on a one-to-one basis to address an individual’s personal needs and substance use goals.

Individual Counseling

Brief individual counseling following assessment is provided to help the individual actualize his/her identified substance use goals by building on their strengths, identifying coping skills that promote and maintain change, developing problem solving skills, engaging support systems and monitoring progress. Limited to 4 sessions, it includes preparation for referral to the group programming offered at St. Mary’s Counseling Service in both Kitchener and Cambridge locations.

Gambling

Assessment

A comprehensive assessment helps a person decide if his/her gambling behaviour could be a problem, and if so, what might be the best course of action to deal with it. An assessment involves completing questionnaires, reviewing all gambling activities in detail, and whether the gambling is interfering with life at home, work, school, finances or health. The counselor provides honest non-judgmental feedback and helps the person set goals for change and decide on the best course of action. Options include individual, group, or family counseling, or a referral to an outside program (such as a residential treatment program or a community agency). Assessments are completed in both Kitchener and Cambridge offices on a one-to-one basis to address an individual’s personal needs and gambling behaviour goals.
