July 13, 2015 (Kitchener) – St. Mary’s General Hospital has been awarded Accreditation with Commendation by Accreditation Canada, a significant achievement which recognizes that St. Mary’s has gone beyond Accreditation Canada requirements and is to be commended for its commitment to quality improvement.
During a four-day on-site survey at St. Mary’s in June, Accreditation Canada surveyors evaluated 1,877 criteria, 200 more than the last survey in 2011. St. Mary’s met 1,863 of the criteria and surveyors described St. Mary’s score of 99.4 per cent as “exceptional”.
“I am extremely proud of the dedication, passion and perseverance of our staff, physicians and volunteers who strive daily to provide the safest, highest quality care for our patients and families,” says President Don Shilton. “The survey team spoke to staff, board trustees, physicians, volunteers and patients during their on-site visit and the team noted that patients they interviewed were moved to tears of gratitude when speaking about their experience at St. Mary’s.”
Accreditation is a rigorous on-going process over a three-or-four year cycle that helps healthcare organizations review their programs, services, policies and procedures against national standards of excellence in order to see where they are doing well and where they could improve.
The surveyors highlighted many areas of strength at St. Mary’s, including:
- Engaged, committed and compassionate staff, physicians and volunteers and a transparent and open leadership team
- A culture of continuous quality improvement and success using the Lean Management System for performance improvement that is showing “tremendous sustainability”
- Consistently one of the safest hospitals in Canada based on the Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR), a measure of hospital mortality rates
St. Mary’s is next scheduled for an Accreditation Canada review in June of 2019.
