Update – St. Mary’s Declares Gastrointestinal Outbreak Over on Inpatient Cardiology Unit (3 East)

February 15, 2015 (Kitchener) – Today an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness (diarrhea) on the Cardiology unit at St. Mary’s General Hospital has been declared over. The unit, located on the third floor, is now fully open to new admissions.

Five patients were affected during the outbreak which was declared on February 11. Three have been discharged and the remaining two have recovered.

St. Mary’s continues to work with Waterloo Region Public Health to determine the cause of the outbreak. Test results are expected in the next few days.

February 11, 2015 (Kitchener) – St. Mary’s General Hospital’s inpatient Cardiology unit has been closed to new admissions today due to an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness (diarrhea) in a small area of the unit. Four affected patients are currently in isolation as a precaution and continue to be monitored. All are stable. The unit is located on the east end of the third floor of the hospital.

The Infection Prevention and Control team at St. Mary’s is working closely with Waterloo Region Public Health to determine the cause of the illness. It is currently unknown if the cases are related. Enhanced cleaning and infection control procedures have been initiated and will continue until the outbreak is declared over.

Visitors to the rooms affected by the outbreak will be asked to comply with appropriate infection control practices. They will also be asked not to eat or drink in the patient rooms. Visitor restrictions related to Sunday’s flood have been lifted.
