St. Mary’s General Hospital Implements Three-Year Strategic Plan

Continuing Our Legacy of Compassionate Care

April 29, 2015 (Kitchener) – St. Mary’s General Hospital has implemented a three-year Strategic Plan which complements our Vision to be the safest and most effective hospital in Canada. Called Continuing the Legacy of Compassionate Care, the plan outlines the Hospital’s three strategic priorities for 2014-2017. To learn more about the plan, and watch a video, visit

The three priorities in St. Mary’s Strategic Plan are to:

  1. Continue to deliver clinical excellence in cardiac and respiratory care by developing and implementing strategic plans for both our Cardiac and Chest programs. As well, we will work with Grand River Hospital, Cambridge Memorial Hospital and our healthcare partners across Waterloo Wellington to implement a common electronic health record system to support the needs of patients and their caregivers.
  2. Transform the way we work by developing a culture of problem solvers. We will continue to implement our Lean performance improvement system throughout St. Mary’s to ensure that a proven, standardized approach is applied to problem solving, leading to better and less costly care for our patients and families.
  3. Reach beyond our walls to better integrate patient care across the Waterloo Wellington Region. We know that what happens before patients arrive here, and after they go home, is just as important to a successful outcome as the care we provide in hospital. We will work closely with patients and families to ensure more seamless care as they move from hospital to home.

“A strategic plan is a declaration to our community and to our staff, physicians and volunteers of our areas of focus over the next three years to move us closer to achieving our Vision,” says Don Shilton, President of St. Mary’s.

“In preparing this plan, we carried out months of extensive consultation with our staff, physicians, and volunteers, our Board of Trustees, our Foundation, and healthcare partners, as well as patients, families and the general public,” adds Christine Henhoeffer, Chair, St. Mary’s Board of Trustees.
