June 12, 2017 (KITCHENER, ON) – St. Mary’s General Hospital is recognizing six individuals who have contributed in an exceptional manner to the healthcare ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton, St. Mary’s General Hospital and the St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation.
“For more than 90 years, our staff, physicians and volunteers have carried on the legacy of compassionate, high-quality care delivered by our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph,” says President Don Shilton. “We are proud to recognize these outstanding individuals who have devoted themselves to the mission of serving patients and families in our community.”
The 2017 honorees are: Cathy Brothers, Dr. Brian Fielder, Christiane Kahlen, Dora Lamers, Mary Ann McKlusky and Clara Schmidt.
An award celebration will be held on June 16 at St. Mary’s in Heasley Hall from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Recipients were chosen by a selection committee comprised of St. Mary’s Board members, volunteers, Foundation representatives and staff.

Cathy Brothers was Director of Community Services at St. Mary’s from 1975-1992 and a member of the Board of Trustees from 1994 to 2004. She was the Board’s first female Chair from 1999-2001, leading during an important time as hospital services were restructured in Kitchener-Waterloo. Cathy put the hospital’s mission at the forefront of every board decision, guiding it to carry on Sisters’ legacy of compassionate and excellent care.
Dr. Brian Fielder
Dr. Brian Fielder, Hospitalist on the Medicine Unit and a former Medical Director of the Medicine Program from 2013-2016, is known for providing outstanding, compassionate care. He treats each patient with the utmost dignity and respect, embodying the vision of St. Mary’s in his practice. Dr. Fielder is a humble leader who is well-respected by his colleagues and is known for performing extraordinary acts of kindness for patients and families.
Christiane Kahlen is a passionate leader, volunteer and fundraiser who has helped raise millions of dollars in support of hospital priorities, particularly cardiac care. She served on St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation Board from 2001-2012 and was chair from 2008-2010. She was the Foundation representative on the St. Mary’s Board of Trustees from 2006-2008. Christiane continues to generously support St. Mary’s with the help of her husband, children and grandchildren.
Dora Lamers, a long-time St. Mary’s Volunteer, has dedicated more than 6,000 hours of service to the hospital. She has played an integral role in many of the Volunteer Association fundraisers, especially supporting the Cardiac Program. For 21 years she has travelled the hospital’s halls twice a week, delivering mail on time and with a smile. Her strong sense of initiative has made her a successful leader and role model.
Mary Ann McKlusky
Mary Ann McKlusky, a Registered Nurse, has been touching the lives of patients and families at St. Mary’s since 1988. She currently works in the Post Anesthetic Care Unit and formerly worked in the Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Unit. Mary Ann’s colleagues describe her as a “rock” for her supportive nature, superior mentorship and strong patient advocacy. Conscientious and compassionate, Mary Ann is devoted to advancing patient and family centred care.
Clara Schmidt has been a member of the St. Mary’s family since 1955. She is a current Volunteer, and was formerly an Administrative Assistant in the Lab and a Clerk in Radiology. Clara’s kind spirit and tireless commitment to providing respectful patient care is inspiring for many. Dedicated, cheerful and hard-working, she fulfills the mission of St. Mary’s every day and welcomes patients and families with a warm embrace.
