COVID-19 outbreak declared on St. Mary’s Endoscopy (Endo) Unit
January 24, 2022
In consultation with the Region of Waterloo Public Health, St. Mary’s is declaring a COVID-19 outbreak on the Endoscopy Unit. So far, five staff are associated with this outbreak and no patients. This declaration follows an investigation which revealed the start of the outbreak as January 21st and is anticipated to continue until January 31st. Our thoughts are with the staff, and we wish them well in their recovery.
Immediate measures initiated include the following:
- All staff working in the Endo Unit today will be tested.
- If additional staff test positive, we may need to suspend all endoscopy procedures until staff can be returned to work safely.
- However, if no new positive cases are identified in staff, we will continue operating the Endo Unit as all cases are currently urgent and emergent and should not be paused.
- Rapid antigen testing will continue for all Endo staff prior to shifts until January 31st.
- Additional PCR testing will be held onsite January 25th.
- Droplet contact precautions are in effect throughout the unit and N95 masks or half-face respirators and face shields are to be worn by all staff on the unit.
- Staff will remain dedicated to the unit.
- Enhanced cleaning continues.
More updates will be provided as they become available.
