National Report Shows Cardiac Care at St. Mary's Among Best in Canada
In a new national report on quality outcomes at Canada’s 39 cardiac centres, St. Mary’s Regional Cardiac Care Centre (RCC) performed better than the national average in five out of six categories.
The Cardiac Care Quality Indictors Report, prepared by the Canadian Institute for Health Information in collaboration with the Canadian Cardiovascular Society, focused on six quality outcome indicators during the three-year period from 2016-17 to 2018-19 to
2020-21.
Highlights of the report show that:
- Mary’s has one of the lowest 30-day in-hospital mortality rates after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), coronary bypass graft (CABG) and aortic valve replacement (AVR) compared to the 39 cardiac centres across Canada
- Mary’s has the fourth lowest 30-days readmission rate after isolated CABG compared to measure group in Canada and third lowest readmission rate in Ontario.

“We are very proud of the care provided by our team at the St. Mary’s Regional Cardiac Care Centre,” says Dr. Heather Warren, Chief of Cardiovascular Services at St. Mary’s. “Despite the many challenges encountered during the pandemic, the Cardiac Program at St. Mary’s has continued to provide safe and effective care, as demonstrated by the recently published quality indicators, and we’re always striving to make further improvements for our patients and families. This is a testament to the dedication, skill and passion of our staff and physicians. It would not be possible without the support of the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation and its donors, for providing the equipment and technology required to care for our patients,” says Warren.
While government funding provides for the day-to-day operational costs of the hospital and the staff within its walls, state-of-the-art equipment and technology is funded 100% through community donations. St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation engages with the community to provide the support required to fund capital investments and new and replacement equipment not covered by Government funding.
“Donations are vital to ensuring that the over one million patients who come to St. Mary’s have access to the innovative, best-in-class care that they need, deserve and get,” says Susan Dusick, President and CEO of St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation. “We work very closely with the staff and physicians at St. Mary’s to ensure that they have access to the tools and leading-edge innovative technology that they need so that lifesaving care is there when our patients need it,” says Dusick.
On Saturday, September 11th, St. Mary’s Hike for Heart will celebrate its 30th anniversary. The event is a signature annual event for the Foundation event that raises much-needed funds and brings together cardiac survivors, families, friends and St. Mary’s staff and physicians, helping to provide the funds required to cover costs related to equipment and capital projects.
“Our annual Hike for Heart event is something that patients and staff look forward to each year because it is an opportunity to come together as a community,” says Dusick. “What makes this event truly special is that it is a celebration of cardiac survivors, families, friends, and St. Mary's staff to celebrate the joy of recovery, while raising funds for St. Mary's Regional Cardiac Care Centre!”
The community is invited and encouraged to register for Hike for Heart and enjoy a 1, 3, or 5 km hike at Laurel Creek, or in spirit along their favourite path or trail to help St. Mary's raise much-needed funds in support of the Regional Cardiac Care Centre - caring for over one million hearts annually!
