Celebrating our Payroll Team
Did you know, in Canada, there are 1.5 million employers who rely on payroll professionals to annually administer $1.06 trillion in wages and taxable benefits, $364 billion in statutory remittances, and $180 billion in health and retirement benefits?
National Payroll Week is September 19th-23rd, and each year we recognize and celebrate the dedication, expertise, and valuable contributions our payroll staff make to ensure that all 1800+ SMGH employees are paid accurately and on time.
Our small, but mighty payroll team consists of five members –one supervisor and four payroll administrators. This team is foundational in ensuring our hospital runs smoothly all while meeting operational and compliance commitments. Working together, the team:
- Provides education and payroll specific expertise.
- Oversees data administration for internal systems (Meditech and Infor).
- Ensures timely delivery of bi-weekly payroll processing. Provides exemplary customer service internally to our staff and externally to our stakeholders.
- Administers and files third-party remittances such as taxes, CPP, EI, benefits, union dues, pension RRSPs, and more, withheld from employee pay and paid to the appropriate organization.
- Provides payroll reports internally and externally, including Canada Revenue Agency, The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, Ontario Health, and Service Canada.
The team has continued to work diligently and without interruption to services, despite the many challenges presented by the pandemic and the Payroll Prism project within the last few years.
“The past few years have been a time of uncertainty in which the accuracy and reliability of payroll has become even more important,” says Wendy Her, Payroll Supervisor. “I would like to express my deep gratitude and admiration to each member of our payroll team –Vicki, Jimmy, Maureen, and Lena for their hard work and dedication to St. Mary’s.”
Our payroll team felt the impacts of COVID-19, much like every team within our walls. In addition to their normal responsibilities, the team was now responsible for processing pandemic payments and infectious disease emergency leave pay, while at the same time preparing for the launch of the new payroll system. This team took that on without question and have been able to adapt quickly, effectively and without delays to payments for staff or vendors, whether on or off-cycle.
Thank you to our entire Payroll team for the work that you do here at St. Mary’s. Your commitment to our staff ensures that we are able to provide safe, equitable and excellent care to our patients and community.
When you see or hear from a member of our Payroll team, please take a moment to stop and say thank you for all that they do here at St. Mary’s.
