Laboratory Services mission and accreditation

Mission statement

St. Mary’s laboratory services exist as an integral part of the health care team to provide the highest standards of care to our patients, and to provide a quality laboratory service to our physicians, nurses, and allied health groups.

We are committed to providing laboratory services in a professional, courteous, supportive, and friendly manner. Our principles form a strong foundation on-which we build and sustain an efficient and effective laboratory service:

  • Patient-safety focus
  • Open, respectful collaboration
  • Transparent communication
  • Innovation
  • Accountability
  • Staff empowerment
  • Good financial stewardship
  • Shared learning

We maintain our high standards by our participation in internal and external proficiency programs, and by complying with our accreditation requirements and professional licensing bodies.

We provide a safe workplace for our staff, and promote continuing education and professional development.

SMGH’s laboratory services have received a five year Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) Certificate. OLA is a peer group accreditation of over 500 accreditation requirements based on ISO 15189 standards. This accreditation process supplements lab licensing and is mandatory for all medical laboratories in Ontario.

The laboratory also participates in hospital accreditation through Accreditation Canada.
