Outbreak of COVID-19 Declared Over on Fifth Floor
St. Mary’s General Hospital is pleased to share today that, in consultation with Region of Waterloo Public Health, a COVID-19 outbreak on its fifth floor has been declared over. We are thinking of nine patients and two staff members who were associated with this outbreak and we wish them well in their recovery. We thank staff for their hard work in bringing the outbreak to a conclusion.
Today’s outbreak update includes:
Full reopening of the unit to new admissions.
Resumption of Care Partner visits.
Diligence with universal masking and face shields continues.
Enhanced cleaning will continue throughout the unit.
We will continue to be diligent as we work to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our hospital.

Update February 12, 2021
In consultation with Region of Waterloo Public Health, St. Mary’s has partially re-opened its fifth floor to new admissions today.
Here is the latest information.
There are nine COVID-positive patients and one positive staff member associated with the outbreak and they are in our thoughts as they recover.
One end of 500 will re-open today to new admissions with one patient per room or with a resolved case.
Staff will be cohorted on each end of the unit.
Diligence with universal masking and face shields continues.
Enhanced cleaning continues.
Care Partner visits can resume in the open end of the unit, and are permitted in the closed end only in exceptional circumstances.

February 4, 2021 – In consultation with Waterloo Region Public Health, St. Mary’s has declared an outbreak of COVID 19 on the fifth floor. Four patients are currently associated with this outbreak and we are thinking of them as they recover.
Measures to limit spread of the virus on the fifth floor are as follows:
The unit is closed to new admissions.
The unit is under droplet contact precautions.
Care Partner Visits are temporarily suspended except when a patient is at end of life or if the care team determines there could be a marked improvement in a patient’s condition with a visit. Efforts continue to enhance virtual and phone visits for patients with Care Partners.
Enhanced cleaning will continue.
