Flags At Half Mast in Honour of Health Care Workers Who Died From COVID-19
On April 9, 2020, an environmental service worker died from complications of COVID-19. His death marked the first health care worker in Ontario to die from this disease. Since then, a total of 16 Ontario health care workers have died from COVID-19. All of them were on the front lines – nurses, doctors, aides, personal support workers, environmental services workers and others.
Despite the risks, health care personnel have sacrificed a great deal this past year. They have worked through global PPE shortages and the anxiety of possibly bringing the disease home to loved ones. They treated patients through lockdowns, three waves and now, with variants of concern looming in the community. Regardless, they showed up day in and day out because caring is fundamental to their nature.
To honour all health care workers that have lost their lives to COVID-19, hospitals in the Waterloo and Wellington regions will lower their flags to half-mast on Friday, April 9.
