On behalf of the Board of Directors of St. Joseph’s Health System (SJHS) and, in consultation with the Diocese of Hamilton, it is my pleasure to inform you that Dr. Tom Stewart has accepted the position of CEO of SJHS and Niagara Health.
As many of you know, Dr. Stewart is currently serving in an integrated system role as Joint Chief of Staff for Niagara Health, where he is also EVP Medical at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Haldimand War Memorial Hospital. Tom will begin his new role on August 1, 2018
The Board of Directors unanimously endorsed Tom’s appointment as our next President and CEO. He is an internationally recognized healthcare executive, academic and physician leader who not only brings a deep commitment to our mission of compassionate care and service but a wealth of experience, energy and enthusiasm.
Tom is well known beyond our local community for his outstanding contributions to the health care system provincially and nationally. He has worked in a number of academic hospitals and distinguished himself as an award-winning leader in critical care medicine. He has led many provincial initiatives and was a key architect of the Ontario Critical Care Strategy.
Dr. Stewart graduated with a Doctor of Medicine with Honors from University of Ottawa. He specialized in internal medicine and adult critical care medicine and undertook research fellowships at the University of Paris VI and the University of Toronto. He is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University who, while at the University of Toronto, led a number of international clinical trials leading to publications in some of the most reputable journals in the world, including the New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of the American Medical Association.
Tom is thrilled to be taking on this new position and will focus on growing the highly regarded and innovative, integrated model of care and expanding our academic mandate, in partnership with McMaster University, Brock University, Niagara and Mohawk Colleges.
He will continue to build on the relationships he has forged in Haldimand War Memorial Hospital and expand his leadership role to include Niagara Health and our six different member organizations including: St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, St. Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener, St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Guelph, St. Joseph’s Home Care, St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre in Brantford and St. Joseph’s Villa in Dundas.
We will be announcing interim appointments to replace Tom’s positions for St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Niagara Health shortly while we undertake an appropriate search process.
I know you will join me in congratulating Tom and supporting him in this exciting new role.
