Did you know?
Brain
People with gum disease may have an increased risk of stroke due to a higher incidence of blood clots.
Lungs
Harmful bacteria in plaque can be aspirated into the lungs increasing the risk of pneumonia, bronchitis, and other respiratory diseases.
Immune System
Your immune system can only make a certain amount of cells like antibodies and white blood cells. So, if it’s working hard to defend against infections and attack bacteria in your mouth, it won’t have the same ability to do so elsewhere in your body.
Diabetes
People with diabetes have a higher incidence of gum disease than people without diabetes. That’s because if you have problems keeping your blood sugars in control, it could lead to an infection and can cause injuries from healing quickly. Diabetics who smoke have an increased risk of tooth loss and people who have type two diabetes are three times as likely to develop gum disease.
Pregnancy
Oral microbes can cross the placental barrier increasing infection risk to the fetus. Gum disease can cause pre-term labour and low birth weight.
